The General AssignmentMake a user comment on a film and publish it on the user comments section of the IMDB web site for the specifics film you are viewing. Some SpecificationsIn about 800-1000 words, make a comment on the IMDB concerning a film. In addition to meeting the parameters of the IMDB web site and being a well written intelligent comment, your comment needs to incorporate details and concerns relevant to our readings and class discussions. This should be an opportunity to show off your new found tools for examining film as well as an opportunity to become more familiar with a valuable resource for thinking about film. It is of utmost importance, though, that your comment focus clearly on a specific element, and that the element is understood in the terms of our class. You can use any film made before 1940. You can locate one from any source you like: the library’s Digital Media Center and Video Classics (34th and Boston) are both likely sources for films, but certainly there are films available from many sources. Obviously, in order to do this assignment, you have to agree to a couple of things. You have to agree to publish your comment, and to have the comment submitted early enough to receive a link to your work. The IMDB moderates comments so it might take 24-72 hours to get a link. You also have to agree to send me the link by the due date/time; I don't care when you submitted your review, I care when I get the link. Also, in order to make a comment, you'll have to register with the IMDB. All you need is an email account, but you absolutely must have some way to verify that the IMDB account is yours; if your name is not in the account title, then you have to be able to either send me a message from the IMDB, which requires additional registration information such as a sms text message or an amazon.com account, or simply demonstrate your ability to log on to the account. There is a 1000-word hard limit on the IMDB's web site, but you'll have a difficult time showing that you know what you're talking about in that short space, especially because you have to be pretty obvious that you are relating it to our class, but do not reference the class in your comment or make it explicit that you are writing in response to anything other than the film. The grading rubric is as follows: mechanical and stylistic correctness, 30%; uniqueness and validity of observations, 30%; relevance of concerns to our class and focus on one specific element 30%; following IMDB guidelines, 10%. |
